Day one of Backyard Bible Clubs

Whew…what a day yesterday! I don’t know if anything could have prepared me for a Chuukese Backyard Bible Club.  It was good, but I don’t think that it resembled any Backyard Bible Club in which I have participated. The festivities started at 1:00, but all the children started coming around 1:30 or 1:45. We started singing and then had the Bible story. Praise the Lord that these children are familiar with hearing Bible Stories, but they are not familiar with participating in activities that go along with the Bible Story.  Next we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We had to remind the kids to throw away their rubbish (trash) otherwise it would have just been left on the ground. They also were stuffing extras into their pockets to take home  and eat later. Next we started playing games. I am not sure that these kids are used to playing games organized by adults. After playing one game they organized themselves into race groups and ran races for about 20 minutes. They were much better at organizing themselves!!! I have never seen anything like it.  Finally, we ended our day with making crafts (salvation bracelets). They really liked the bracelets. Several of the boys wore them as anklets. After it was all over, the kids stayed around and started building nests out of the wilted flowers that were under the tree. After they perfected their nests, they sat on them and squawked like a bird. Oh what entertains children! All of the Chuukese/ Micronesian children are fascinated with my accent.   One girl told me” You sound like Bailey off of Zack and Cody, Hi Yall!” Other children have told me that I sound like a cowgirl.  Yesterday,  I am supposed to be getting the van that I will be driving. This will be a blessing because we have had to make several trips back and forth to get all supplies and people to the Backyard Bible club. Love to all!
